Ce poème a été écrit pour rappeler l’incendie de l’usine Triangle Shirtwaist, le 25 mars 1911, où Morris Rosenfeld avait été employé. L’incendie avait fait 146 morts, 123 femmes et 23 hommes, principalement des immigrants juifs et italiens. Les ouvriers n’avaient pas pu s’échapper, car le patron avaient condamné les issues de secours, pratique courante pour que les ouvriers ne prennent pas de pause non autorisée et prévenir le vol.
